What is Eczema?

Eczema is a group of conditions that cause inflammation of the skin, which is superficial inflammation of skin.Typically, In eczema ,theaffected area of skin become red, dry, flaky and most importantly Itchy– it can be even cracked , leathery or oozing out fluid. laterHyperpigmented spots can remain over the affected area.

Eczema can appear on any part of the body. Atopic dermatitis is another term used to define eczema.

Eczema is a chronic problem for many people. It is most common in infants, many of them outgrow it before adulthood.

Symptoms of eczema

Eczema is usually itchy. For many people, the itch is usually only mild, or moderate. But in some cases it can become much worse and you might develop extremely inflamed skin. Sometimes the itch gets so bad that people scratch it until it bleeds, which can make your eczema worse. This is called the “itch-scratch cycle.”

What to look for:

  • Dry, sensitive skin
  • Red, inflamed skin
  • Very bad itching
  • Dark colored patches of skin
  • Rough, leathery or scaly patches of skin
  • Oozing or crusting
  • Areas of swelling

The most important thing to remember is that eczema and its symptoms are different for everyone. Your eczema may not look the same on you as it does on another adult, or on your child. It may even appear in different areas of the body at different times.

Types of eczema

Common types of eczema includes:

Contact dermatitis: caused due to irritants over skin for e.g. detergent, metals, paint , bleach , jewelleryetc

Dyshidrotic eczema: eczema presented with small blisters over hands and feet

Neurodermatitis : presented with thick scaly eczema

Nummular eczema  : presented with coined shaped eczema

Stasis Dermatitis : commonly affects lower limb. It is presented with history of varicose veins with swelling of leg along with eczematous patch

What Causes Eczema?

Eczema runs in families. Certain genes can cause some people to have extra-sensitive skin. An overactive immune system is also a reason for that.

Things that may trigger eczema include:

  • Stress
  • Contact with irritating substances such as wool, synthetic fabrics, and soap
  • Heat and sweat
  • Cold, dry climates
  • Dry skin
